I'm a stage 4 survivor of Breast cancer - still in treatment, considering getting a H1N1 vaccine. Thoughts?

I’m a stage 4 survivor of breast cancer – still in treatment. My daughter is a microbiologist and works for the health department. After she finished pandemic training, she insisted that I get a flu shot (which I usually do) and a pneumonia booster. She also recommended that I get an H1N1 vaccine as soon as they're available. I’m going to discuss this with my onc next week, but wondered what anyone else has heard about immunizations from their doc?

I agree with your daughter. I used to work in the ER and never worried about any type of disease (I recently quit to take care of my mom who has stage IV colon cancer), but I still decided to get H1N1 vaccinated. Right now I am helping out with our public health department as part of the medical reserve corps and we just did the largest mass free vaccination in our county with over 2 thousand people and yes, your criteria fits the high risk group. My background as a med student and a person who has been in emergency medical services for a long time says it is definitely beneficial for cancer patients, but the caveat is to make sure you only get the shot and not the attenuated live virus. Of course the people performing your vaccination will know this so you don't have to worry too much, but just info for your safe of mind. I am still in the process of trying to convince my mother!

Cheers,

Spencer
