My wife had an open hysterectomy, and was cut from pubis to breastbone.  Worse, she had deep hernias and suffered horribly for more than two years until an emergency room visit corrected the problem.  It was horrible to have to watch her suffer and I am very angry that her pain was so meaningless;.  I didn't know that deep hernias existed and should not have to have known. The physical pain was bad, but it took over six months for her to feel better after her strangulated hernias were finally mended.
